8th Annual Salute to Community American Heroes
Annual Celebration to Honor Veterans, Police and Fire Department
This year there were 3 World Ward II Vets who served in the China-Burma Theater of War, The Pacific Campaign going to Guam, Samar, Manus Island and Palau Islands and the US invasion in Europe landing on utah Beach during the Normandy Invasion. They left home at the age of 19 and traveled the world to fight for their country. Honored posthumously was a Vietnam Marine Vet who died at the age of 20 and he along with 9 other students from the local grammar school are now remembered forever on the 'Wall"! Special recognition was also paid to Engine 89, Truck 56, Ambulance 47 of the Chicago Fire Department who, as they say "are just doing their jobs". All are heroes of the Mayfair Community!
