Meetings

We celebrated Halloween by cleaning up our section of Hiway 20. The most northerly two miles of the Hiway in Island County...those just before Deception Pass.
No one came in costume but some of the faces were pretty scarey. A couple of guys said they would be there, but only their ghost appeared.
For those of you who have never had this exillerating experience, if you can imagine it, sooner or later just may find it.
In the past we have found money, we have found body parts, we have found full, unopened 6-packs of beer, newly purchased full bags of groceries, we have found....
Hope to see more of you in a few months when we do this again...
Lion Ed "Old Road Rash" Fakkema
Thanks to Lions Doug Tyler, Dave Glass , Charlie Seablom, Richard Mack, Ian Raymond, and Ryan Thomas. They spent about 20 hours and collected 22 bags of trash.

WARNING
2010 Census Cautions from the Better Business Bureau
Be Cautious About Giving Info to Census Workers by Susan Johnson
With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft.
The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data. The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist?
BBB offers the following advice: If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a hand held device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality
notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home. Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census.
REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.
While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION.
The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.
AND REMEMBER -- THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION. No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau.
Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census. Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.
For more advice on avoiding identity theft and fraud, visit www.bbb.org <http://www.bbb.org/>

24th ANNUAL NORTH WHIDBEY CAR SHOW
The North Whidbey Lions club had to give up the car show when it outgrew the club. The show must go on and the Oak Harbor Rotarians took it over to host the 24th Annual North Whidbey Car Show on Aug. 8th. Past Car Show Chairman Lion Doug Tyler worked closely with the Rotarians to ensure a seamless transition. Fortunately, the Rotarians had some past and present Lions that were intimately familiar with the car show and were able to take on the challenge, most notably was North Whidbey Lion Jim Woessner.
The North Whidbey Lions continued to have a presence by coordinating the car show vendors and were able to maintain some fund raising capabilities. In the months leading up to the car show Lions Doug Tyler and David Glass solicited past vendors and sought out new vendors, eventually having 27 vendors offering everything from BBQ and salmon dinners to sunglasses and local artwork. Invitation was also extended to the South Whidbey Lions and Oak Harbor Lions to be vendors with all fees waived. On the day of the show North Whidbey Lions were there to facilitate and coordinate the vendor setup and teardown, as well as to help in other areas of the show and to ensure the show’s continued success.
We look forward to next year’s 25th Annual North Whidbey Car Show and our continuing participation.

2009 North Whidbey Lions for Learning
RESULTS
The Opportunity Council of Island County recently concluded the 10th annual Back To School drive for very low income and homeless school aged children. Over 380 new backpacks with school supplies were distributed to children on North Whidbey. Without the support of the community this would never be possible. The North Whidbey Lions Club have made it their mission to kick off this drive for the past 7 years. Thank you to all of the members who stood outside and collected supplies from generous citizens who graciously shared. Thank you Mack for coordinating this event. We appreciate Wal Mart and Office Max for allowing us the space to set up and collect supplies. Thanks also go to many outstanding community groups - Windermere Oak Harbor, Retired Teacher Sorority, United Way of Island County, Oak Harbor Lions Club, Island Thrift, Oak Harbor United Methodist, Whidbey Presbyterian and Presbyterian Women, Oak Harbor Church of Christ and Oak Harbor Christian Reformed Church. Every year so many of you contribute to this project. Thank you to everyone who dropped off supplies and backpacks as well as monetary donations. These are hard days for many and especially for the families we serve. Having the resources to give young people a good start to school with a backpack and supplies is a testament to the heart of this community. The staff would like to say thank you and we appreciate your generosity!
